The Dear Mitig Project

“Dear Mitig” (Anishinaabemowin for tree) integrates technology and nature to support student mental health through an interactive digital platform. Selected trees on Toronto-area university campuses will feature QR codes linking to an AI-powered portal where students can email the tree. Each tree’s chatbot, inspired by its ecological and symbolic identity, will respond with personalized letters offering reflection, encouragement, and support. This initiative fosters inclusivity by providing a stigma-free, culturally sensitive mental health resource, incorporating Indigenous knowledge and multilingual accessibility. By blending eco-therapy with AI, “Dear Mitig” encourages mindfulness, emotional engagement, and a deeper connection to nature. The project shifts mental health care from crisis intervention to prevention, offering an innovative, scalable model that harnesses digital tools to enhance well-being, reduce stress, and create a more inclusive, supportive campus ecosystem.
